A flying crow always catches something

Envy

An artistic quest is to connect the inner with the outer world. The personal world of interpretations, ethics, symbolism, myths, with the everyday reality of trial and error.

That inner world turns out to be a lifelong labyrinthine voyage of discovery full of dead-end corridors and unexpected openings.

The outer world is simpler, open to all, you just have to walk towards it.
With that last thought, a world of exchanges is triggered, from a California-based conference in Leeuwarden, to a Dutch exhibition in Xi’an, China.

And lo and behold, that world opens up by itself….

Art has traditionally been a carrier of edifying themes.
Such as religious ones in the series ‘The 7 Deadly Sins’ and mythological ones in ‘The Lusts of Zeus’

The 7 Deadly Sins

Man is a mammal, full of primitive drives. The church defines the most undesirable ones as “the 7 Deadly Sins”, namely pride, envy, anger, greed, intemperance, lust and laziness.

Drift – Greed

Intemperance – Lust

Pride – Laziness

‘The Lusts of Zeus’

Greco-Roman culture is the source of European culture. And primitive instincts were well spent on their gods.

Io & Argus -/- Leda & the swan

No young virgin was safe from the supreme god Zeus, who attacked them disguised as a swan, as a bull, as a golden shower, or simply turned her into a calf.

Danae & the golden rain -/- Europa & the bull

Landscapes in Shangluo

And art can also connect nature with imagination,

A visit to a ravine in Shangluo in China led to Chinese themes, depicted in landscape.

East and West continue to stimulate each other..

Classical Academy of Sculpture

Building an academy from 0 to 5 years old is mainly a mathematical issue, because the investments are at the beginning and the full return is at the end of that period. Only then can the repayment begin.
Yet there was the ambition to teach sculpture and graphics in addition to painting, so to extend the construction phase by another 5 years…

Sculpture

The ‘Classical Academy of Sculpture’ will start in 2010, in a different building. There is also room for a graphics workshop and a drawing room. The latter for an Evening School and for partial courses. This will also get off to a flying start.

Drawing -/- Graphics room

But after 5 years – just when the sculpture academy is at full strength and both academies are in the black – she becomes the prey of a conflict of interest between teachers. The students drop out and the sculpture course is phased out again over the next two years.

Similar problems arose – at the same time as the celebration of the 10th anniversary in 2015 – at the Classical Academy of Painting. These were initially overcome, but by resigning from the management in 2018, the way was cleared for yet another conflict of interests.

Finished with the academy in 2019, it was also about time for a new beginning: now with internationalisation.
